A lightning flash has 4 different types of energy 
1) Heat energy 
2) Light energy 
3) Sound energy
4) Electric energy
Basically, what happens is that when storm clouds form, they are made up of lots of dust and vapor particles. Through some mechanism, this cloud becomes electrically polarized or charged.
