Of all the bills that made up the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was the most controversial. It required citizens to asset in the recovery of fugitive slaves. It denied a fugitive's fight to a jury trial

It failed because it's goal was to prevent things like secession and the civil war, but eventually it didn't make everyone happy as it was supposed to so it only postponed the war for a further time, about a decade, which brought many disasters as it is known from history.
