Romeo blames himself for Mercutio’s death because he tried to stop Mercutio from fighting Tybalt but by doing that, Tybalt was easily able to hit Mercutio and eventually, killing him.
He blames him because he doesn't want to get in trouble because he was the one that kills him hope this helps
