The railroad monopolies created economic hardships for farmers by charging high prices to ship agricultural goods to market. In the second half of the 19th century, famers relied most on the railroads to deliver their crops to the rest of the country. They were powerless and couldn't do anything to evade the very expensive rates of the railroad companies.
