If (a+b)^2=25, and a^2+b^2=17, then what is a*b equal to? Thanks.

a^2 + b^2 = (a + b)^2 - 2a*b

substituting:-

17 = 25 - 2 a*b
a*b =  (25-17) / 2 =  8/2 =  4 answer
