Australia is on of the driest countries in the world and it is common in some parts of its land to have no rain for long periods of time, or to have really small amounts of it.

Since some parts of land are desserts and receive extremely small amounts of water, it makes a lot of sence to consider that arid and semi-arid regions can receive less than 5 inches of rain a year.
