People were often very sick, pale and did not live long due to the harsh work conditions. They often had very small children who worked in the factories with them in dangerous conditions and worked long hours. They were often underpaid and did not have people to protect or support them in the workplace like their bosses who took advantage of them, instead of providing them with good work conditions.
