The Difference Between Misdemeanors and Felonies. Felonies and misdemeanorsare two classifications of crimes used in most states, with petty offenses being the third. Petty offenses are sometimes called violations and are usually punished by a fine with no jail time.

A misdemeanor is a serious offence and can be punishable by up to a year in prison, but a felony is MORE serious, and the punishment is harsher than for a felony.
