Answer:

3 empires were dismantled.  

Explanation:

Europe, Africa, and Asia looked different before WW1.  The borders were changed for political reasons and not for economic reasons.  It probably took about 5 years to really dismantle the empires.  I am sure that this was kind of different for these people because they were not quite sure where the border actually was in the beginning.
