you would just multiply -5(-17a) and that would equal 85a

When you multiply numbers by coefficients (numbers with variables attached) you multiply the two numbers and keep the variable the same. So, to solve this you'll multiply -5 by -17 and keep the a the same. -5 x -17 = 85.
