Mercantilism is basically an old form of capitalism. It was a way to increase profit and boost the economy. Jean-Baptiste Colbert used mercantilism to promote trade within France. He founded the French East India Company which instituted trading relations with other nations to increase France's influence in foreign countries. They traded dyes, furs, coffee, sugar, and other raw materials.
